We caught up with our good friend deadmau5 to chat about playing new London club matter, his debut album Random Album Title and his thoughts on the role of the DJ.

ILM: So we are talking about matter, you played there last night, how was it from an artist point of view?

deadmau5: Ah yeah, it's really good. The sound system is awesome. I see it more like a live venue than a club, I'm diggin' it huge.

ILM: So you'd like to play there again?

deadmau5: Defo. The floor has like 75,000 watts comming through it, crazy! I walked through when Chris Lake was playing and it sounds fucking great. Although I was actually quite ill during my set, I had to lift my mau5 head and gag, twice!

ILM: Eew! Dont gag inside the mau5 head!

deadmau5: [laughs] No way man, that would be soooo wrong.

ILM: You have your debut album out now on Ministry Of Sound...

deadmau5: Yeh! I just popped into an HMV last night actually and saw it in there.

ILM: Nice, how weird was that?

deadmau5: Yeh, it was really weird.

ILM: You produce so many tracks, was it tough picking the right ones for your debut album?

deadmau5: For that particular one not really. I only had so many tracks that go together and I really didn't want to do like a mash up CD with a bit electro, a bit of techno, a bit of trance. I wanted to get some kind of flow. Rather than an artist album, it's more like an artist compilation. Even thought all the tracks are produced by myself, so you could call it an artist album. It's just good to get something out there for the fans and people that appreciate my music. It's weird because I have been making music for over a decade and this is the first time that there is something phyisical in the store that you can buy and stick on your desk. I will work on a proper artist album hopefully towards the spring. It won't all be dance music either. That's something I am looking forward to.

ILM: The title is funny, Random Album Title...

deadmau5: RAT yeh [laughs] We were travelling in the back of a taxi somewhere in Brazil trying to figure out what to call it. Random Album Title. I'm sure you more than most know my silly ass sense of humour... [laughs]

ILM: [laughs] It's a cool title. Classic deadmau5!

ILM: I was chatting to Lesley Wright, Editor of DJMag earlier on, you were recently on the cover of the magazine. We were talking about the DJMag Top 100 DJ Poll. I asked her who she thought would make the highest impact on the poll this year, and she said deadmau5 could do very well... But you're not really a DJ are you?

deadmau5: No. Its funny, if I come like anywhere in that top 100, like 99 or something I would be happy. Show me the discs and I'll show you a DJ, I have no discs, well actually I have my hard disc, does that count? [laughs]

ILM: You were on the cover of DJMag and the title was The day of the DJ is gonna end...

deadmau5: Yeh, that was a quote from the interview. I don't have anything against DJ's, they are my number one supporters. I just like to see things move, jeez there was a time it was all vinyl, then CD's came out and vinyl is getting a little more bit obscure, and now you're seeing bits of interesting hardware up on stage. I'm a technologist and I'm all for the next cool way of presenting music. To me Ableton, controllers and all these plug-ins are just things that are right up my alley. Who knows, in two years it might not be, because everyone will probably be using them, so you move on you know. Really the DJ is the conducter of the club, the guy at the front delivering the music, so whatever way it comes...

deadmau5 was voted 11th in the DJMag Top 100 DJ Poll and is currently ripping clubs all over the globe on his world tour.
