Ali Campbell from UB40 chats to I Like Music

The new album is lyrically wicked. One of the songs is about Gary Tyler and the fact that he's still locked up, but we can't really talk about that. It's also about our brave new rainbow nation that we thought was happening around us and how it's no more because of the segregation that's going on. Because, when we started 27 years ago, if you'd have taken eight people out of Borsall Heath where we're from in South Birmingham, they'd have looked like us: they'd have looked like an Arab, and a Jamaican and a couple of mixed race, and Irish, because that's how it was, it was a real multicultural mixing. Now it's segregated; it's area codes, and it's Somalian gangs, black gangs, Indian gangs, white gangs. There's no mixing. It's a terrible shame. I think it's something we've inherited from hip hop culture in America. Because, America claims to be multi-cultural, but it's absolutely totally segregated.
