Ali Campbell from UB40 chats to I Like Music

Satellite radio is good, but it's more about giving you a wider choice; there's a wider choice, but that doesn't help the artist who's trying to get his product over.

It's a whole new world now. I recently did an interview for a guy who's writing a book about the business. And I'm saying, it might seem like a good idea, but the business isn't going to be anything like the one you're writing about in six months; it's not going to be like this.

We just saw a thing where you have a wristband that you get at a gig and it's got a USB memory stick on it and it's got the gig on it. Things like that are happening weekly. So instead of being afraid of it, what record labels should have done was embrace it, but five years ago and they wouldn't be in the position they're in now. But it's all because of their own doing, because downloads are free. Kids expect it for nothing now. They don't miss the holding of the record. They see it on an iPod now. What do you mean I've got to pay for it? You know… it's exciting times but the record companies out priced themselves by making CD singles almost the same price as albums a decade or so ago. That destroyed the singles market. Now what's happening is the album market is being destroyed by the Internet. And now what people should be doing is thinking about the 40+ people being on the internet, instead of targeting at the tweenies, aged 8 to 12. Is that who you've got to target your music at? Sorry I can't do that. So where do you go from here, nobody knows?
