ILM: Finally, I must thank you because you introduced reggae and dub to white kids like me.
ALI: Yeah, Goldie Lookin' Chain there's a line in a track of theirs which says "I wouldn't know what dub was if it weren't for UB40." That made our day. Because our mission when we started was to promote dub and nobody knew what dub was 27 years ago. We were on a mission to promote dub. You have to promote dub with reggae. And how we did it was, our second album, Present Arms, that was a big chart hit. Instead of releasing a third normal album, we said why don't we do Present Arms in dub to show people what dub is? They know Present Arms, let's give them the dub album and they'll know exactly what it is then.
So we had the first dub album in the charts, but they were brining them back in droves, people were saying mine's faulty there's no vocals in it, and we had to tell them, 'yeah they come in at the end'. That's how people didn't have a clue what dub was, and we were showing them by doing Present Arms in dub, and it did sell very well and that's how it started to get through… 'oh, Present Arms in dub.'
