Ali Campbell from UB40 chats to I Like Music
But the most fun was when I was in Jamaica with Sly and Robbie. For me, it's always the most fun to be in a recording situation or having a meal with Sly and Robbie. I love them, they're my heroes. I grew up listening to them, even though they're only a couple of years older than we are. UB40 wouldn't sound anything like we do if it hadn't been for Sly and Robbie, because we learned parrot fashion from Sly and Robbie's records.
ILM: So to get to work with them must've been amazing?
ALI: The first time I was star struck. But I've worked with them for a decade and a half now and I love them; they're my mates and they're my heroes. Working with them is a pure joy, because I'm a musician… they're amazing, they're so fast and so good. Comparing that to pulling teeth with UB40… that's why it's a joy.
ILM: So how did the idea for the album come about and how did you persuade people to get involved?
