Ali Campbell from UB40 chats to I Like Music
Where Smokey Robinson is concerned, we knew he was coming to England, so I got Kim Ruby, she's managing this whole project, to ring up his people and asked Smokey if he'd be into doing it. He apparently went and asked his kids if it was worth doing or not, he told me. I said, 'do you know UB40 music?' And he said, 'of course, but, to tell you the truth it was my daughters who convinced me to do it.'
I asked Gwen Stefani as well. She was the second person who said she'd do something with me. I met her a few times, but that was in California.
ILM: She's uber cool.
ALI: Yeah. She's lovely and she's an old ska fan. No Doubt were a ska band when they started in the days when the English Beat went over. So she had that ska band and I think she's really cool anyway. I like her new single a lot. And you know that single where she goes, 'If I was a rich man, that ba ba ba…' that's a Bashment Beat, so I was well happy.
