I Like Music Because heading
  • JunJun: ilikemusic because... music can convey a mood, enhance a mood or change a mood. Music can be used to inspire and the artform is simple yet complicated. It's fun to listen to and even more fun to create and perform. It speaks when just a simple word can't. It's a blessing!!

You could be completely miserable or waiting for a bus and put on any song that inspires you and you can escape into a little world, well that’s what I tend to do anyway.

Ali Campbell from UB40 chats to I Like Music

ILM: Please describe the Ali Campbell process of writing music - does it tend to be lyrics or melody first?

ALI: With UB40 what happens is, we jam the music, somebody writes lyrics (most of the band write lyrics) and then those lyrics are given to me, because I'm the tunesmith. I do write lyrics but only in couplets and one in ten is my idea. I can sort of start things and then I give them to more eloquent members of the band and better writers like my brother or Jimmy. But I'm the one who puts the melody. I'll choose a backing track that I think goes with the mitre of the lyric and then, once I've chosen which backing track to use, because I don't read or write music, I'll then keep going over it and over it in my head, and then I make a tune. Then I go and demo it, and then, if everybody likes it, we'll approach it again and rearrange it or add lines and verses.
