ILM: Your and Vince's take on dance music synthesized music fused with sweet soul - a ground breaking thing to be doing, how did 'Only You' came about?
ALISON: Vince had left Depeche Mode and had written this song which he offered them as a parting gift. Quite understandably, they rejected the offer. Vince had a great song in his pocket and a point to prove. He needed a singer. He knew of me because I was a Basildon punk singer that was known locally before the Mode became big. He asked me to sing on his demo and took it to his label, Mute. They loved it and the voice he had recorded on it so they decided to record it with me singing it.
ILM: How does the music industry compare today to when Yazoo came out? What do you like about it now and not like about it now?
ALISON: In the early 80's music was all about individuality. However crap anyone was, it was of their own doing. I liked the fact that post punk there was room for freaks. Thought was as important as sound and vision. Today it is all about vision and technology.
