You could be completely miserable or waiting for a bus and put on any song that inspires you and you can escape into a little world, well that’s what I tend to do anyway.

Beardyman chats to I Like Music

ILM: You were doing Product Design at Uni and now you are doing your dream career - making music! What would be your advice to young people on following their dream?

Beardyman: Um...I would say be a realist. If you think it has been very hard for you trying to make it in music and that is because you are shit then you should give up and keep it as a hobby. But, if you are constantly told by people that you should make a career out of it, then you probably should. It is a scary industry, but there is space for you if you are a) really skilled - because then you can be a session musician or performance musician or b) if you are completely insane, you have really good ideas and you're passable at your instrument. But to be honest you need to have both of those and be committed once you have started on that road. At any point all it will take is for you to rest on your laurels and say 'Ooo - I've made it as a musician' and then you won't have!

ILM: Please finish this sentence...The best things in life are....

Beardyman: The best things in life are....quite expensive. Don't believe what they tell you! It makes me sound horribly materialistic but hey...ok...some of the best things in life are quite expensive. Haha!
