Brandi Carlile chats to I Like Music

"He was explaining something to me and I just told him that he sounded so beautiful, so smart and then I was like, be honest with me, do British people think that people from the States sound stupid? And before I could even finish he was like "YES, yes we do, I can't lie to you". I just thought that was hilarious because I think I agree (laughs)".

But despite her concerns with how she's received here, there is an inner confidence to Brandi Carlile. She talks of how nervous she was to play here for the first time, yet she on stage she doesn't appear so. She works hard as a performer, charming and working the audience, even as a support act. We talk about differing UK audiences and she can recall the idiosyncrasies of the crowds in Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Leeds. She's taken it all in. She's brave; she accepts the harder challenge of what she repeatedly refers to as a 'listening' audience, preferring this to the party crowd, the easier short term ride. She absolutely thrives on stage and it shows.
