Carl Cox chats to I Like Music
CARL COX: A lot has changed since then, because it was all brand new. Clubbing, raving and festival going, there was no such thing in those days, most of the clubs at the time were playing commercial top 40 kind of records, so there was no real theme for the kind of music that I was playing, so that had to be created.
To create it - that had to be done in dodgy warehouses in London and surrounding areas and then the rave events were put on by promoters who felt the need to take this music outside of the clubs into something unique and different. So that's what the appeal was. But now we don't have that feeling whatsoever.
Apart from we now have organized festivals with attached dance music alongside them and some official dance music events with a line-up of DJs; and we all know who they are, what they play, how long they've been playing for and everything that goes along with it. So the mystery has gone from what it used to be like, to what it's like right now.

simon f baker: ilikemusic because... you can transcend the confines of the material world with it, it's probably better than shagging in fact. There is virtually nothing more satisfying than when a load of chords and words suddenly come together into a song ; suddenly everything in life seems to fit and make sense once more.

Jo Whiley: ilikemusic because... It makes me laugh and it makes my cry and it gets me out of a stress if I’m in a stress, and, if I’m in a good place then it will make me in a better place. It’s all about the emotion, it’s all about the feeling where music takes you to and what affect it has on you.
Hugo, The Maccabees: ilikemusic because... I just do. I’ve always liked music. It’s just my thing.
Oliver, Young Knives: ilikemusic because... It evokes a mood and a feeling of when you last heard the track.
