Daniel Merriweather Chats To I Like Music

ILM: And yet we're all influenced by them. You can hear it. You can tell that songs are 'hits' even if you don't like them...

Daniel: Absolutely. It's like Barbie Dolls. I don't have a soft spot for them, I'd never buy one, they're not my thing, I don't like them at all, but I can completely understand why a five year old girl would like a Barbie Doll, right? When I listen to some pop music, it's the same objective view. It's like 'Oh. I get it. I get why people like it. But it's actually quite horrible.'

ILM: You said recently that you're 'Singing for people who still appreciate honesty in pop music'...

Daniel: Yeah! I love pop music. Love Me Do by The Beatles is a perfect pop song! But it came from a musician's perspective. It has the musical cornerstones of a quality song. Take Sam Cooke. He sang some of the simplest pop songs, but they were sung by someone who wants to make good music. That's the difference between golden era pop songs and contemporary pop. A lot of people just use computers until there is hardly a human element left. Are we going to keep going until we don't even make songs ourselves? Until a computer can do the whole thing alone? It's like Orwell's 1984. You know, why don't we just do that? Why have all these airbrushed pop stars making these albums and pretending that there is this human element, when we could just use binary code to make songs? THAT'S THE QUESTION I POSE TO YOU NOW!

ILM: OK. Well, you go and write some songs and I'll work on saving pop music...

Daniel: Hahah! Yes! You should just make a song....!
