I Like Music chats to Dom Cook, The Marketing Director of MySpace

Dom: I had five years of marketing for Virgin Records and then five years of marketing for EMI records. I managed a band who are signed to Polydor a few years ago. I ran a club night and was just involved in the music business. I also worked as a club promoter. I just got involved in all aspects of the music industry really! The reason I took this job was because I had worked with bands and used MySpace and found it so useful and so helpful. I just knew that it was not some b*llshit or an over hyped site. It is genuinely so handy! It was a pleasure to come and work for them!

ILM: What would your advice be for anyone who wants a career in the music industry?

Dom: There are so many ways. From being in a band to helping a band as a roady, or a manager, or an agent or maybe run a club night. There are many ways as well as going to college and doing a music degree or going around getting work experience. There are many avenues. Although it is a very small industry there are lots of individual ways through. There isn't a system. I've never worked for a bank but I imagine you kind of have a number of stages to go through. You can come from all different directions if you want to work for the music industry. It is just a difficult one to get that first step done and underway. With the music industry, and particularly MySpace, the people who are involved are entrepreneurial and quite maverick. It requires someone to be very up for gettiung involved, getting their hands dirty and showing that they have a passion for music and entertainment.page << 1 2 3 4 >>
