ILM: What is your advice for young people just starting out in their careers on achieving their dreams? Doing what they want career wise?
ESTELLE: Figure out who you are on a real level. Don't sit there and be a follower. Be who YOU are. You're going to figure it out all through your twenties. But try and do the best you can, go above and beyond. Don't just accept your friend down the road's opinion. They're not buying your record, find out a different point of view. Don't be hard faced about it. If you ask for advice you're going to get 100% real advice.
But don't go to people who've not done anything, or people in the industry who've got very little experience. Go and ask advice of people who are where you want to be. I play my records to Wyclef Jean because he's legendary, or Swizzie because they're legendary. I want to be legendary. Let me find out your opinion on my stuff and where I can make it better. You have nothing to lose. And if you have no access to those kinds of people, find the people in your town that are doing it. Forget the genre or style, find the people who are big in your town. Find The Feeling or an artist or manager who had made a pop hit and find out their opinion. Don't limit yourself.
ILM: How's New York been and are you still having sleeping problems?
ESTELLE: I've figured out I have sleeping problems when I have something to be worried about. But right now I have nothing to be worried about. I did my best with the album and there's so much love and support for it, I have nothing to be worried about. But someone said to me, it's the panic that nothing's going wrong.
