Grandmaster Flash was the first DJ to make the turntable an instrument. Before him DJs picked up records by their edges, laid them down, picked up the tone arm and let them play. Grandmaster Flash was the first to manipulate a vinyl, moving it backwards and forwards with his hands.
Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five were formed in the mid 70's. Pioneers of the Hip-Hop movement, they went platinum with their single The Message (1982). They are the only Hip-Hop group recognised in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, with Grandmaster Flash the only DJ, an honour presented to them in 2007.
Like a true legend, Grandmaster Flash is still pushing boundaries and immersing himself in his music. ilikemusic was honoured to catch up with him for an inspiring conversation about how Hip-Hop has changed, why he can't stop making music and his advice for anyone looking for a career in the music industry.
"I Like Music because… It brings out the child in me. That's why I love producing, DJing and remixing. When I go on the stage I turn into this great big kid. I have my fans in front of me and I just play. I don't think about what I'm playing. I just play what I need to play and get the audience to come with me on this musical journey."GRANDMASTER FLASH
