I Like Music Because heading
  • JunJun: ilikemusic because... music can convey a mood, enhance a mood or change a mood. Music can be used to inspire and the artform is simple yet complicated. It's fun to listen to and even more fun to create and perform. It speaks when just a simple word can't. It's a blessing!!

Hard-Fi Chat To I Like Music

Richard Archer (vocals), Ross Phillips (guitar), Kai Stephens (bass) and Steve Kemp (drums) are Hard-Fi - the product of their suburban West London environment; the sound of twenty-something gun-slingers on the minimum wage. It's the sound of a band weaned on the heady concrete glamour of The Stones, Dexys, Curtis Mayfield, and Happy Mondays. In love and in debt - the raw materials required to soundtrack a life of box-fresh Adidas, Berwick Street vinyl, and the black economy.

They made their debut mini-album themselves with £300 (which included the track, Stars Of CCTV), got signed to small independent Necessary Records and then, as the majors got excited about a potential landmark album, they licensed their record to Atlantic. And since releasing their debut album, people can't get enough of Hard-Fi.

They were nominated for the Nationwide Mercury Music Prize and have just embarked on a headline tour to support their awesome and relevant single, Living For The Weekend. Ultimately they're a band that strikes a chord in more ways than one.

I LIKE MUSIC caught up with Hard-Fi's lead singer, Richard Archer, in Bournemouth before their gig at The Old Firestation (2005).
