Hard-Fi Chat To I Like Music

ILM: You're into the DIY ethic of making and releasing your own music. How do you feel about people accessing your music for free on the internet?

Richard: In Boston in the States some people came to see us having downloaded our music - they came to the show and knew all the words, and said they will buy the album as soon as they can. That's cool, people seeing what we're about, and genuine fans will want to buy the record with the artwork. There's nothing worse than buying an album and finding its shit, so why not check it out first that way. Of course musicians shouldn't be penniless, we've got to eat, but as a means to check out songs before buying the album, that's ok. The album has to be good and people will want it. There's no point making an album with a couple of good songs and the rest is filler.

ILM: Are there any other artists you'd like to work with or produce?

Richard: I'd love to work with Gorillaz, what they're doing is really inventive. We had Rick Ruben phone us up when people were going crazy saying this mini-album we'd made ourselves could be a landmark record, and I'd like to work with him. Although apparently he just puts his head round the door and says 'everything alright?'
