Estelle chats to I Like Music

The UK's finest, award-winning artist Estelle released her brand new single, Wait A Minute (Just A Touch) late last year. The wil.i.am produced track is her blazin' hot debut for the new Homeschool Records label. Set up by and owned by US soul sensation and global superstar John Legend, Estelle is the first artist to the label distributed via Atlantic Records. Now Estelle is back with the brilliant American Boy featuring Kanye West and, it's gone straight in at number one!

I Like Music caught up with Estelle five years after we last spoke to her, to talk about working with Will.I.Am, John Legend and Kanye West; getting tips from Cee-Lo and her music-making style.

ILM: We last spoke to you before the release of FREE and the 18th day, five years ago - how are you, fill us in with what you've been doing …

ESTELLE: The past five years I've been living, I've been growing up, I've been a real human being. I've just figured out a bunch of stuff about myself. As an artist, as a woman and as a human being, I've figured out a bunch of stuff and it's put me in a good standing with recording this album. Now I'm fearless about it. I know who I am, I know what I'm doing and I know where I need to take it, so it's like... do it, there's nothing to be scared of.

ILM: Good attitude! You've been signed by US soul singer John Legend to his label 'Homeschool', an imprint on Atlantic Records. Tell us more?

ESTELLE: Well, as I was with the last label we were working on my album and, as I got into it, they were suggesting really silly things, I think mostly because they didn't quite know what to do with me. I didn't want to waste a bunch of money or anyone's time, I know myself and my level of musicality. So I said 'let me just go please' and they were like, 'you know what no problem' so we worked out a deal and John said to me, 'I'll sign you'. Straight down that's exactly as it happened.
