There is virtually nothing more satisfying than when a load of chords and words suddenly come together into a song ; suddenly everything in life seems to fit and make sense once more.

Estelle chats to I Like Music

Everybody was scared to talk to Justin Timberlake. He walked around in Birmingham around the halls with his bodyguard trying to see what was going on. I came off stage, he was watching our soundcheck. Everybody was like, 'quick run backstage, there's Justin. And I walked past and I was like 'whaddup Just' and he had a cold, but he was like, 'heh how you doing? You allright?' I think he just wanted to talk to someone, because nobody would talk to him. Everybody was just floating around. He was cool. I don't get starstruck or act randomly different or stupid around artists or famous people, because we're all the same, we bleed the same, we fall over, we sh1t the same.

ILM: Please describe the Estelle process of making such flipping good music?

ESTELLE: With me I come from a rapper background in writing songs. I never wrote songs where I started with the melody or nothing. Then I got a chance to get in a studio with John, so I'd be rapping and the lyrics will have mad content and be a bit choppy and have a different vibe to it rather than just a straight singing song, different melody structures. And he'll come in and be like melody first. And I'll be like, 'ah, I can't do it this way.' So we butted heads a few times. Then we found a way to work. He just let me do my thing and we'd adjust afterwards, and that was the best way to get it out, because it wasn't working, I was like, 'Move away, you're getting on my nerves.'
