Jay -Z Interview

Jay-Z : Nah, just the line up, a different song selection and how it's put together. I don't know if that's a surprise, you know. Like I didn't plan for Chris or Gwyneth to play with me at the Royal Albert Hall, it just happened. It was Gwyneth's birthday. It was almost like a… birthday present. You know, from her to me on her birthday [LAUGHING] So it just happened like that, so I just never know what happens.

ILM: So you're encouraging anyone who has a birthday to show up at your gig?

Jay-Z : Yeah!

ILM:Let's talk about Glastonbury...

Jay-Z : By the way, I've never ever had a show that's caused this much stir. I'm really looking forward to that one. I've never been involved in anything this controversial as far as just doing a show. What's the big deal about doing a show? I guess it's heritage, people hold that dear to their heart and see it one way. But that's how the world is, the world has to change. It can't just be one thing. That's the beautiful thing. That people feel passionate about an event. You have passion about the event and you have an opinion about who should perform there, but that's just the world and the world changes. We have to embrace the change, the artists of yesterday paved the way for the artists of today and that's just how music is. For us to arrive at this point took years. It took Afrika Bambaataa DJ'ing in the Bronx and Sugarhill Hill gang first appearing on Soul Train, to Run DMC going platinum. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince winning their first Grammy. You know, that's just the natural progression. Hip Hop has put in its work like any other form of music, you know? And no we don't play guitars like Noel Gallagher, but, like I say, we all have to respect each other's music right? We just have to respect each other's genre of music and move forward.
