Mark King of Level 42 chats to I Like Music

English Brit Funk band, Level 42, were one of the biggest bands of the 80s and early 90s, writing the soundtrack to many of our lives and gaining fans across the globe. The band gained fame for its tight musicianship, soulful songs and funky riffs but parted company shortly after Phil and Boon left "[they] felt that the musical direction wasn't for them," and Mark and Mike forged their own solo careers.

But now, Level 42 are back! Their greatest hits album, The Definitive Collection, is out (released June 12) and a new album, Retroglide is being released in September ahead of a UK tour in October (where Mike and Mark will be joined by new band members). This will be Level 42's first new album since 1994's Forever Now and Mark promises it's a good'un.

I Like Music caught up with the bass maestro "Thunderthumbs" himself, Mr Mark King, to chat about the Isle of Wight, the music industry's metamorphosis, Level 42's sound and how legendary hits such as Running In The Family and Lessons In Love came to life.

"I like music because… it likes me!"
