Mark King of Level 42 chats to I Like Music

ILM: So it grows organically whichever way. Nice. I adore Lessons In Love, Running In The Family, Love Games… just brilliant, melodic, fantastic. How did Running In The Family (my all time favourite) come about?

MARK: Oh nice one, I like playing that one too, it's such a great one to do live. Just for example that song, I distinctly remember driving around Balham and Clapham with that tune, 'de de dedelalalala' which became the main verse line was going round my head and I could really hear Mike singing it, but when I showed the guys and said what do you think of this, they immediately chucked it and we went another way, and then came up with another chorus, so this bit became the verse and I ended up singing it, with Mike joining in on the chorus, so it just completely turned itself on its head, but it's a good song anyway.

ILM: It's that melody which is the glue that holds the track together.
