Mark King of Level 42 chats to I Like Music

In terms of advice, I'm glad I did in the 1980s because I think it was much easier to do it back then, it must be so hard to get a deal now. I mean when we first started the usual deal they were giving out to artists was for five albums, that gives you a chance to get better and hone your skills, because you have to learn like anything else, it's a bit like an apprenticeship. But now it seems to be that the standard deal is, you've got one hit single and that's great but if your next one isn't any good you're off the label and you're dumped. So its such a fast turnaround now, it's hard to get any faces, apart from the real mega stars, it seems
the rest of the chart is made up of also-rans. It's like here today gone tomorrow within 18 months, and that's really sad, because you don't have the chance to really develop your careers in that space of time.
