MARK KING - LEVEL 42
ILM: Level 42 The Definitive Collection is out on June 12th. Totally reminds me of what an awesome band you are. For those who've not experienced Level 42, Can you give me your own description of the Level 42 sound/album?
MARK: There's a lot of hits on there from the 1980s and what's been really nice about it is a lot of people have been saying to me, that it so reminds them of their school days and all the good things that were going on while they were at school, first boyfriends and girlfriends and things. Music is fantastic like that because it take you right back to one of those great moments just like that. It's really nice to be part of people's memories like that.
ILM: And Level 42 are definitely the soundtrack to people's lives during that decade. Can you describe the Level 42 sound for our younger readers?
MARK: It is a very diverse collection of influences really. When we began back in 1980 we were a bunch of 21-22 year old lads who really liked jazz fusion, our heroes were definitely coming from the other side of the Atlantic; we liked elements of jazz and elements of funk as well. And we used to get together once a week and jam at the Guildhall School of Music where Mike Lindup was studying. And within really only a few months of larking about like that we got the chance to audition for a guy called Andy Sawker who had a release called Atmosphere on MCA records in 1979/89 and had success in the clubs with this.
