Mark King of Level 42 chats to I Like Music

ILM: Your bass driven jazz funk I believe has inspired many who grew up with your music. Does it occur to you when making music that you might inspire others for many generations to follow?

MARK: No it didn't really. If that's true that's fantastic. When you're doing these things you're only ever focused on that period in time, so you're not really thinking ahead or planning world domination, or influencing generations to come, you're just trying to make the best music you can at the time.

The thing is to try to be true to yourself and make the music that you like to make, because if you try and start to make music that you've been told to make by other influences like record company guys or trying to second guess things, it starts to get really tricky then. That was one of the reasons actually that the original line up split up in 1987 when Phil and Boon left the band. That was one of the problems Phil had, because he felt that the musical direction we'd now grown into wasn't for him. So these things are just there.
