Mark King of Level 42 chats to I Like Music

MARK: It takes time and its very hard to do these things quickly, although having said that, when we did Lessons In Love, which is arguably our most successful single, we did that really quickly. We were busy touring in America because Something About You was being successful over there, but that was 9 months after it'd been successful in Europe, so now Europe wanted to go with something else and they didn't have another single they thought they could take off the Whirl Machine album, so they said 'Look you guys have to go into the studio right now and give us a couple of singles we can go with, maybe off your next album, which is really hard when you haven't even done the next album and haven't been thinking about.

So we went straight to the studio and we laid down three songs, Lessons In Love, Children Say and Freedom Sunday which were all to be featured on the Running In The Family album, which was going to come 7-8 months down the line.

When we made that single, it was then put away by Polydor for a couple of months ready to release it while we were going to get back and be able to promote it. Then we got this email … no, not email, what would it have been then? A fax, that a German girl artist had heard the song and had done a cover version of it and she was going to put it out, so it really forced the hand and they whizzed this thing out.
