ILM: Can you describe the Super Mal process of music making?
LINDEN: Yeah absolutely, we'll come up with an inspiration for an idea. For instance, with Bigger Than Big, the inspiration there was that we were listening to a lot of the street sound type of tracks from late 80s hip hop and electro and people like Houdini and trying to emulate that kind of sound. In particular the kind of sound we're liking at the moment is the French electro house sound, so it was the joining of those two styles really. And, in terms of the physical process of putting the tracks together, we'll lay down the rhythm section first and put the beat together, and then write the bass line around that. And then the melody follows and they all sit together fairly succinctly.
ILM: Do you have a piece of software and hardware you couldn't live without?
LINDEN: I think the piece of hardware that we couldn't live without is a Nord Lead keyboard, which is fantastic and it's the one we used to put the chords down on Bigger Than Big and that's one of our favourite bits of hardware, and also these micro synths we use for most of the work we do. So they'd be the must haves I think.
ILM: How did working with Luciana come about?
LINDEN: Super Mal came about the end of last year, the three of us, myself, James Reynolds and Jay Cox. Myself and Jay were old school friends had always been into music and had started making stuff together, and Jay had done some work in the past with Luciana. So, once we got the track finished, we sent it out to a number of top line writers including 'Looch' and it came back, and hers was by far and away the best. We loved it instantly, and as soon as we heard it we knew it was the one we were going to use.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
