At the end of last year if you looked very carefully at just about every music magazine, website and newspaper's 'Best Albums of 2006' list there you would find, nestled quietly, almost anonymously, Midlake's 'The Trials of Van Occupanther'. And rightly so.
In a year which saw the home-grown, gritty weekend realism of the Arctic Monkeys and the day-glo escapism of the New Rave scene dominate Britain's musical landscape, Midlake snuck in through customs with nothing to declare other than a beautifully crafted, beguiling and compellingly addictive album.
And, well, if we're feeling bold (which we are) it's one of the greatest albums since the millennium. In short, it's a classic.
But don't take our word for it, Midlake have been repeatedly name-dropped by luminaries such as Radiohead and Editors and their recent, typically understated, but quite brilliant gig at the University of London Union saw Paul Weller in attendance.
So towards the tail end of 2006 an already obsessed ilikemusic.com was to be found trailing around the UK following Midlake on the Bella Union Tour at the expense of work, the bank balance and ultimately the Christmas shopping.
