Midlake chat to I Like Music

We eventually caught up with lead singer songwriter Tim Smith in a small bar prior to their gig at The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth to try and find out what's gone so wonderfully right.

ILM: Tim, you must be very proud of the record and the response it's getting, especially since it took, what, a year and a half to make?

TIM: Yeah, it's nice. It took roughly a year and half to make, I guess. The writing was six to nine months. And recording was definitely a year, almost exactly a year.

ILM: It's a long time!

TIM: Yeah, it is. We also had day jobs at the time.

ILM: What were you doing?

TIM: I was working at place putting batteries in remote controls. Assembly line kind of thing. You know, you put the batteries in, you put the back on...

ILM: Jesus, that sounds soul destroying!
