Midlake chat to I Like Music

It's taken it's toll on us, but we all realise that really good things are happening for us now.

ILM: Do you feel like there's a momentum building now, because there was a real sense of celebration at the gig last night?

TIM: Yeah, it's been cool because before this tour we were...

ILM: ...not really on the radar?

TIM: Exactly. We came over here for this tour and we started out playing to crowds of two-hundred, three-hundred people. Then we found we were selling out some venues. We've gotten to do some really crazy things we've never gotten to do before, so you can start to tell something's working...whatever it is.

ILM: It sounds very different to the previous record. Was that a conscious decision or a kind of natural process of evolution?

TIM: Well, the songs are a different type of song, so that automatically changes the way you perceive them and approach them and record them. And, of course, we were listening to all these 70s albums and stuff, so that really affected me and affected my songwriting, I hadn't really been exposed to that stuff before too much.
