NIKOLA: Thank you. Well, first of all, it begins with a thought. Sometimes I don't actually know what I'm writing about at the beginning and it comes out as a solid thought, and it's quite amazing to watch that, as some words come in your head. For me, music and lyrics go together. Some writers will go 'be bop bop do wop di wop' [Nikola sings] and then they'll add the words to it, but like to do them together, because a melody and lyrics have more meaning when it comes straight together for me.
I like free flowing thought. Poetry is a major reason why I started writing and so, because I've written poetry, words come out quite naturally. Also melodies, I've been singing since I was eight, so those come quite naturally, and usually I'll sit around the piano with someone or by myself and a guitar, and we'll just come up with a concept and write around it.
I've been learning a lot about writing. You can be selfish writer and write only what you want to write and write so that other people don't understand, or you can write the thought for everybody, and that's what I've been trying to capture: what do we all experience? What do we all need to hear? What do I need to hear, when I'm writing a song in pain, would I need to hear hope? In a sad song, I always like to add a little bit of hope, because I don't want to drag people down. And also, I write them mainly from experience and observations, I like truth.
