Pete Tong chats to I Like Music
ILM: You've had July off from presenting your Radio1 show and invited some deserving deputies to come in each week, including Erick Morillo, Groove Armada, David Guetta and Calvin Harris - were they given a free reign or have they had to stick to the tried 'n tested Tongy format?
PETE: No, I talked to them all. To me the start of the show is very important because it's about bringing the daytime into the night time, so they follow the format. Well, they've followed the format to a T… In terms of the musical choice they've followed my recommendations just for the start of the show, but then they do what they want to do. I've not had any conversations with them; they just work with my producer.
But the start of the show is probably the most important thing… to get from daytime Radio 1 into night time and still have an audience there to do their thing. Eric and Groove Armada have done it before. David did his debut and was terrified (he told me) but he had a lot of fun. And Calvin Harris, it's a big step up for him to do one, but he's had a great year.
