Pete Tong chats to I Like Music

ILM: I gather you've been stockpiling some ace new music this month to present via your radio show (coming from Ibiza) in August, what are your top tunes for the summer - anything particular to look out for?

PETE: I get so many records… I think there are some huge underground records that I'm gonna play all year that won't necessarily cross over, but you'll hear them everywhere. There's the Shinedoe record that Steve Angello's mixed, it's called Phunk, that's absolutely huge. Freakside by Shlomy Aber is huge, as is his new record called Blonde… And, from a cross over perspective, Robyn featuring Kleerup - HeartBeat, I'm hearing everywhere. Umbrella (Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso) and It's True and The Swedes record, Get Dumb, I'm hearing everywhere.

Becoming a very big record at Pacha is this record I've just mixed with Dave Spoon called 1973 and it's actually James Blunt! He's an Ibiza resident now and he wrote this song based on his experiences last year of going out clubbing everywhere. It's actually about Pacha the year it opened. His version is like a Steely Dan kind of tune, kind of Blue Eyed Soul and we've turned it into a Pacha anthem. The karma is good. James Blunt isn't a name that'd roll off the tongue when you think about clubbing, but he's really got into the whole Ibiza thing. He's just done his album launch in Ibiza and, if you can see beyond Beautiful, whatever you think of it, it's one of the most successful British exports we've had music-wise for about 20 years. He has got an amazing voice and he wrote some great words and he wrote them with a good spirituality about the whole history of Pacha, so it seemed like a natural one for me to do.
