Simple Plan chat to I Like Music

ILM: You've sold in excess of 7 million records worldwide - a blend of classic punk energy and modern pop that's distinctive and entertaining. Please can you describe the Simple Plan music making process? Lyrics first then melody or vice versa or random?

CHUCK: I wish we had a formula down, it'd make things so much easier, but honestly it all depends, especially with this record. Most of the time it starts with a guitar or a piano or a melody and lots of times we'll even write a whole song with no lyrics; that's really hard when you have to go back and put words in, and other times we'll have a lyric. On this record we used different kinds of inspiration to start the songs. We went to Miami to work with a producer who used to work with Timbaland, and we arrived with nothing in Miami and said lets just get inspired by what he does.

So he did some drum loops and some cool track sounds and we just wrote around that. And it was thrilling and new for us to do that because we'd never done that, it was refreshing to look at songwriting from a different perspective. It made us write probably the most different sounding and ground-breaking songs on the album, like When I'm Gone and The End and Generation.
