Soul of Man chats to I Like Music
ILM: It sounds like you are a bit like a jigsaw, you both bring something to the table that fits together well?
Justin: Yeah! Today I have been searching through lots of music and you tend to find that a lot of artists sound quite similar. A lot of their production especially. You hear one big tune that they have done and the same ideas are just repeated. When that happens you lose the excitement about that artist. When I look over what we have done over the years all our music has the same vibe but it doesn't have the same sound. You can tell it is our music but there is no distinctive pattern of using the same drum beats. It is quite varied.
ILM: Finger Lickin' were one of breakspoll's big winners - 'Best Label' Are there any funny anecdotes you can share from the awards?
Justin: It's not very funny but I was completely sober this year! Nothing particularly amusing happened to me apart from just watching everyone else! We have actually won best label every year which is quite nice in many respects but also a bit crap because there should be more competition. The first year the Plumps didn't actually come for whatever reason, so we ended up doing some life size cardboard cut outs of them. They won loads of awards and the cut outs had to keep receiving them which was quite good. There were pictures on Radio One of us standing there with cut outs of Lee and Andy...haha..they were there next time. It's difficult to remember really, all these nights merge into one.
