The Beach Boys David Marks chats to I Like Music
DAVID: Initially, the band started out with Al Jardine and a folk sound with an acoustic version of Surfin on Candix Records. It wasn't until Carl and I incorporated our Fender electric guitar thing into Brian and Mike's songs that the Beach Boys signature sound was created got us signed to Capitol Records. I'm proud of that, definitely…especially when I hear other guitar players who were influenced by that sound we created.
But its most rewarding when people of all ages jump out of their seats to dance when we play songs like Surfin' USA and Little Deuce Coupe or tell me they rocked their daughters to sleep to Surfer Girl…it never gets old seeing people's reactions to those songs!
ILM: During the time you've been with the band, both early days and more recently, can you tell us about the memories and highlights/standout moments you can share?
DAVID: My greatest memories of the early days have more to do with the general group camaraderie we shared than a specific show or recording session…there was a certain chemistry between us that was very special. I felt it again at the Capitol reunion.
