The Charlatans chat to I Like Music

The Charlatans are one of the UK's finest bands and they continue to knock out consistently great records. From forming in 1989 and releasing Indian Rope through their own label, to their first number one 'back in the day' with the glorious The Only One I Know to their debut number one album, Some Friendly and their fantastic new eclectic album, Simpatico, The Charlatans have taken their music from the early beginnings of the Madchester scene to the world.

On their journey, the band have had some very tough times to deal with, from the untimely death of keyboard player Rob Collins, who was tragically killed in a car crash in 1996, while Tony Rogers has suffered health problems. Testament to their strength of character, the band has fortunately remained strong with their creative nous intact, supporting each other along the way in order to do what they do best - make cracking songs.

As The Charlatans prepared for their forthcoming tour, we caught up with TIM BURGESS and bass guitarist MARTIN BLUNT at Sanctuary Records, before the release of their fantastic new album, Simpatico, to talk about the band's music-making process, how the industry has changed over the years, and the best and worst habit of each 'Charlatan'.
