The Charlatans chat to I Like Music

TIM: I think it sold 15,000 copies in quite a short space of time and that helped us to get a record deal.

ILM: How do you think the industry has changed for the worst and the better?

TIM: People always like people when they're just starting off don't they?

MARTIN: Yeah, there is that special moment there, the first flushes of …

TIM: Fame…

MARTIN. That's a rush. But, how record companies have changed is they've all bought each other up now haven't they? The good thing about it now with a lot of new bands coming in there is the burgeoning thing of independent labels being funded again now, and the Internet has helped. To start with record companies saw it as a threat, and I don't know if they dealt with it properly, instead of embracing it they saw it as this big threat and lost a lot of ground. They're shrinking though, I think there's only four or five big labels in the world now, they've all merged.
