The Charlatans chat to I Like Music

TIM: That can depend as well. If it's a song that Mark and myself team up together for, we'll do stuff on the guitar and it'll pretty much come together at the same time. And over some of Martin's instrumentals, I have to then jam it and record as much as I can and play it back, and it's like, 'is that was I said because that sounds really good,' and then you start getting images. For me personally with the words, I feel it very hard if I'm rushed. It's better for it to grow organically. It's ok to have a little bit of deadline, but I just think I'll fail if there's a deadline. And then if there's a few missing lines, I'll ask around, 'has anyone got a secret stash of lyrics?'

[laughs]

ILM: Your first Top Ten single was 'The Only One I Know', which defined the Madchester scene. It's one of my favourite songs in the whole world. How did that come about?

TIM: I remember how the melody came about, because I was just walking along and thinking about the music really. I like to walk (and hum).
