The Hours

The Hours are Ant Genn and Martin Slattery, two Northern lads who between them have worked with Joe Strummer, Black Grape, Elastica and Pulp. They formed The Hours in 2004 and their self-produced debut Narcissus Road was recorded in West London the following year.

I Like Music caught up with Ant Genn to talk about new single Ali In The Jungle, touring with the likes of Joe Strummer and streaking at Glastonbury.

"I Like Music because… it is the very essence of human communication bypassing all need for words and cutting to the most visceral and fundamental part of our being."
ANT GENN, THE HOURS

ILM: Your new free download, is out now. Murder or Suicide. And Ali In The Jungle is released on 9th July. Can you describe how Ali In the Jungle came about and describe its whole vibe?

ANT: It came about weirdly enough I went to a Patti Smith concert at the Meltdown three years ago and she came on stage and she was so powerful and potent and positive that it made me realise in the first 30 seconds that I had to write songs with more balls and power and more honesty considering what we'd been writing, because we'd just been writing songs from a lyrical point of view. And in a flash of inspiration I pulled out my mobile phone and wrote, 'it's not how you start, it's how you finish; it's not where you're from, it's where you're at, how quick are you gonna get up?' And I went in the next day to the studio and I told Martin about the gig and how ballsy she'd been and I got on the guitar and he got on the piano and we just wrote that song instantly, and what's on the record is pretty much the first take; the first take of piano as we were writing it and the first take of guitar and drums. It's got the raw energy of the moment that we captured.
