The Mars Volta Chat To I Like Music

ILM: Your work has always had a lot of depth to it, both musically and in the methods and stories which work their way into its development. Can you describe the vibe behind Octahedron? What sets this record apart from your previous material?

Cedric: I was listening to a lot of Scott Walker and a lot of Roky Erickson. Roky Erickson has moments were he does a lot of crazy, fast paced rock and roll. Then he has a lot of beautiful ballads. Often the subject matter tends to make it not that acessible. During our last press tour we went and saw Vic Chesnutt play. The whole concert just broke our hearts. He was great. He was in this wheelchair, he was doing Nina Simone covers, he was doing accoustic stuff. The lyrics in particular are just heartbreaking. Not what you would expect from such mellow music. We wanted to go down that direction really. A lot of our stuff like The Widow and Miranda, and things on other albums, we are never really able to showcase live.
