Thievery Corporation Chat To ilikemusic
Thievery Corporation are DJ and production duo Eric Hilton and Rob Garza. Their sound refrences music, instruments and cultures from around the world, held together by a strong foundation of dub, bossa nova and bass lines. No strangers to a whole host of influences, their most recent live show saw them stood behind their decks at the back of the stage, suppling the grooves, beats and bass as numerous performers joined them, from belly dancers, sitar players, MCs to soul singers, bongo players and more.
Their debut EP Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi was released in 1997, and their fifth album, Radio Retaliation, was released in September 2008. Though they are no strangers to throwing a party the Thievery Corporation ethos has always stretched a little futher. Currently working with the United Nations World Food Programme, whose message they play at the start of their gigs, Thievery Corporation are highly influenced by current political events, stating that Radio Retaliation is 'a more overt political statement' than records before, on the grounds that 'there's no excuse for not speaking out at this point.'
After catching them live at Shepherds Bush Empire, ilikemusic caught up with Rob Garza to talk about the Thievery Corporation process of making music, how it all began, what their musical influences are and why music can be such a powerful tool for spreading a message.
