Trevor Nelson chats to I Like Music

Trevor Nelson 2007 From Kiss FM DJ, Soul II Soul shop co-founder and club promotions manager to Radio 1 DJ, Trevor Nelson is, not only one of the UK's most respected DJs and champion of RnB music in the UK, he's also one of the nicest people in the music industry. When I Like Music caught up with Trevor at the BT Digital Music Awards in London earlier this week, we had a chat about music, Trevor's interviewing highlights and the web.

I Like Music because.... it helps me celebrate the highs in life and it helps me escape the lows in life." TREVOR NELSON

ILM: We have an editorial policy that means we choose not to slate bands or artists, because I Like Music after all…

TREVOR: That's what I'm like and people say I'm a bit too nice. But that's the beauty of music, it's a democracy, its objective, you can say what you like.

ILM: You've interviewed so many greats. What have been the highlights for you in your career so far?

TREVOR: Stevie Wonder. He's my favourite artist of all time, he's a complete genius and I got the chance to interview him one on one a couple of years ago. He had his keyboard on his lap, and every record I mentioned he started singing; it was amazing and then he gave me his phone number, because I said 'As' is my favourite record. And he said I've got a 14 minute version of that in my flat in New York, when you're in New York call me, and I'm like 'oh yeah,' so he gives me his mobile number.

But, I ran in to the sea with it in my phone and I lost his number! That's a true story. It's a better story than keeping the number and never phoning though isn't it? So, Stevie Wonder…

ILM: Legend!

TREVOR: And James Brown. He did a show for us, a live performance. When you're a kid you never think you're going to meet these people. When I met them I wasn't star struck because I'm used to doing interviews but really and truly a couple of weeks later you sit down and you pinch yourself and think these guys have given me hours and hours of entertainment.
