Jamelia Sings For Mandela In Trafalgar Square
JAMELIA TO SING FOR MANDELA IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE
Jamelia will stage a special, one-off performance this Thursday, 3 February at 12h00 in honour of Nelson Mandela's public address in Trafalgar Square. The occasion marks an important moment in the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Campaign for 2005.
Former South African President, Nelson Mandela will speak to a crowd expected to be in their thousands and call on governments of the powerful G8 countries not to miss this opportunity in 2005 to bring an end to world poverty.
Jamelia, a MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY supporter said:
"I certainly hope that thousands of people take an early lunch break this Thursday and join me in Trafalgar Square to witness Nelson Mandela's support for the Make Poverty History Campaign. It is a true honour to be able to perform at this momentous occasion, not only for a man I greatly admire and respect, but also for the UK public and fans around the world"
For the Make Poverty History Campaign, this public event is particularly well-timed. It takes place on the eve of the G7 (Group of 7 industrialised
nations) Finance Ministers meeting in London where it is hoped that rich countries will make significant steps in dropping the debts of developing countries which currently costs poor nations $39 billion a year.
In his address, it is expected that Mr Mandela will be putting pressure on world leaders to make good on their promises to increase and improve aid for the poor, deliver trade justice and provide further debt relief. With global coverage of the event, Mr Mandela's endorsement will encourage thousands of people around the world to join the campaign and take action on their governments.
White bands, the global symbol of the campaign, will adorn the square, the lions and Nelson's column and will be worn by everyone present.
Adrian Lovett of the Make Poverty History coalition said:
"The excitement about Mr Mandela's visit is growing all the time. We've been overwhelmed by the numbers of people saying they want to see him at Trafalgar Square. When he delivers his tough message to the world's most powerful decision makers, thousands of voices will be cheering him on".
