Dizzee Rascal Takes Home Mercury Music Prize 2003

Dizzee Rascal has won the 2003 Mercury Music Prize with his debut album, 'Boy In Da Corner'. His album, was one of eight debut albums nominated for the prize and Dizzee beat tough competition from albums by bands such as Radiohead, Coldplay, Lemon Jelly, The Darkness and Athlete. Last year's winner Ms Dynamite, another young urban street music maker, presented Dizzee with his award.

The 18-year-old was shocked but happy to win the £20,000 and told Radio 1 that he'd be giving some money away to some youth clubs, for musical equipment. Dizzee, real name Dylan Mills, said as he picked up his prize: "Support British talent because it's out there."

Favourites to win, The Darkness, performed 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love' at the ceremony and felt just being nominated was enough of a prize.
