Supergrass Live @ Southampton Guildhall

'Alright', predictably, was the catalyst. The opening bars saw the crowd finally react as one rapturous whole.

Later a sofa was brought out for Gaz to treat us in comfort to acoustic renditions of, aptly, 'Sofa of my Lethargy' and 'Late in the day'.

'Going out' was the only notable omission, but when you've got the likes of 'Caught by the Fuzz' and the sublime 'Sun Hits the Sky' in your canon, who cares!

See, Supergrass never let you down. They can do pretty much anything and do it well.

They've never garnered the feverish, cult acclaim of the Libertines, but unlike the mighty, mighty Libs there's never been any danger of Supergrass blowing it big-stylee.

The band once claimed they had toyed with the idea of giving up touring to become merely a studio band.

Well, they haven't, and I sincerely hope they don't. Not while they're still smiling and people continue to smile back at them.

Here's to another 10 years.
