British Artists Dominate European Album Sales
According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) UK artists are dominating album sales in France and Germany with sales reaching a four-year high last year. Brits are taking the lion's share of the recorded music market in both countries with 23 of the top 100 albums by UK artists.
In France, more than one in ten albums sold are by UK acts.
Robbie Williams is still one of the most popular artists in France with three albums in the top 20 for UK artists. James Blunt too is popular in France with his Back to Bedlam album the biggest-selling album of last year.
Meanwhile, in Germany, British singer Katie Melua's Piece By Piece album, was the second best-selling UK album in 2006.
Coldplay, Depeche Mode and debut albums from Corinne Bailey Rae and James Morrison also featured in the top 100.
"Music is one of the UK's great cultural and economic exports," said BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor.
"The fact that UK labels are gaining an increasing share of these major international markets demonstrates the diversity and quality of new British artists."
