Coldplay Top UK Album Charts With Viva La Vida

After only three days on sale before the UK charts were announced Coldplay's fourth album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, has taken the UK Album chart by storm, coming straight in at number one.

With an estimated 302,000 copies sold since Thursday, this release has become one of the fastest selling albums of all time. After knocking Paul Weller and his release 22 Dreams from the number one spot, the band stated on their official website:

"This evening, Viva La Vida was confirmed as the UK's Number One album. We're pretty darn pleased.
Thanks for buying it."

10 million copies of the band's previous album X&Y have been sold since 2005 and Coldplay look set to continue their reign as one of Britain's favourite groups with the release of this follow up record. This comes as no surprise after their official website collapsed in May, when the first single from the album, Violet Hill, was made available as a free download for seven days. Gennaro Castaldo from HMV puts Coldplay's un-failing popularity down to their broad appeal;
