Cyberstar Sandi Thom - Who Cares If Its Hype?

Sandi played a sold out show at the Islington Academy on May 19th. If you couldn't make it down, you can still catch the gig online at Sandi's website..

She said of her astonishing rise to success: "It was funny. You kind of spend such a long time trying to get the attention of these people, then they end up in your kitchen, drinking tea."

So what if a PR company created a buzz, that's what they're paid to do. So what if they recruited 'street teamers' - most labels do, their aim is to spread the word on the street. If the music isn't any good, that won't stand up as a PR tactic. And, so what if the PR company emailed millions of virtual ads promoting the free webcast gigs, again, that's what they're paid to do and people wouldn't listen if they didn't want to.

What's more, Sandi has been working hard for her 'overnight success'. She's been performing from an early age and spent six months busking around Europe before enrolling at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. This is where Sandi honed her song writing and performance skills. Whilst in a seven piece urban outfit Sandi reached the semi-finals of Radio 1's Urban Music Awards, hosted by Trevor Nelson, she has also been the voice of Impulse body spray!

These days she writes cracking pop songs that are a delight to listen to, and whether she broadcast for 7 or 70,000 people from her basement, who cares? As long as she has talent and innovative people working for her.

Bottom line, all the people buying her records can't be wrong. Shame some areas of the press have a 'sour-grapes' attitude to flourishing new talent.page << 1 2 3 >>
