Bestselling Britpop Rebirth as Homegrown Talent Storms UK charts

2006 is being hailed as a new golden age for British music as UK artists have achieved their best sales figures in almost a decade. Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys and Razorlight are leading the way as UK homegrown talent are topping bestseller lists. The Kooks and Corinne Bailey Rae are among other British artists included in top seller lists.

Official 2006 music sales figures released in January 2007 showed that British artists are dominating the charts to an extent not seen since The Spice Girls and Oasis led domination. British artists recorded a 62% share of the top-selling albums according to trade body BPI, the highest total since 1997 when Britpop was at its height. Seven of the top 10 bestsellers of the year were from British acts.

Furthermore, there has been a huge increase in the number of debut albums charting highly.

Arctic Monkeys spearheaded this change with their Mercury Music Prize-winning Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not, the fastest-selling debut of all time. They are fourth in the best selling album lists and top the best selling debut list.
